New Orleans Barista Social Club is joining forces with Eater.com to host the Cascara Challenge Drink Competition featuring signature drinks from New Orleans-based coffee and cocktail professionals. The event will be held Thursday, September 10, 8 p.m. at Merchant in the CBD and is open to the public.
Join us as we explore the culinary potential of cascara, an often overlooked byproduct of coffee production, by challenging beverage professionals to craft unique and tasty signature drinks. Each competitor will present their drink and describe their approach to the ingredient, and will be judged by an expert panel.
The cascara for this event is provided by MadCap Coffee Co., and complimentary samples will be provided to those in attendance.

What is Cascara?
Coffee begins its life as a fruit bearing two seeds. The husk of this fruit is often stripped away mechanically before the coffee itself goes on to be cleaned. The discarded husks are mostly composted and returned to the soil as fertilizer, however, they can be dried and steeped, creating a tea-like beverage called cascara. (via MadCap Coffee Co.)
